Bug Description

When I first installed Oneiric, both touchpad and trackpoint worked fine (almost): both pointing devices were listed in "Pointing devices" application, settings like scrolling emulation for trackpoint and two-finger scrolling for touchpad worked too.
The only problem was "lost synchronization" message in log which were accompanied by temporary (1-3 secs) freeze of pointer from time to time (approximately one time per 10 minutes). Both pointing devices successfully survived suspend-to-ram.

Recent update has changed all.
Here is excerpt from package list change of etckeeper:

# Now both trackpoint and touchpad doesn't work right after boot in half of cases.
# Even if they work after boot, they often stop working after approximately an hour of uptime.
# Even if they work after an hour of uptime, they loose scrolling function and start detecting as mouse, not touchpad/trackpoint.
# Additionally instead of random freezes trackpoint now goes crazy and starts jumping on screen and clicking everywhere for two seconds.
# Both trackpoint and touchpad don't survive suspend-to-ram.
# Sometimes when trackpoint works after boot it behaves very strange: pushing stick to the left causes pointer to move to the left but then immediately move back half of runned way.

Pointing devices are almost completely unusable now!

What I've tried:
# Load older kernel - doesn't work.
# sudo modprobe -r psmouse && sudo modprobe psmouse - doesn't work
# Turn off "disable touchpad on typing" - doesn't work

I am also having this problem. The problem is reproducible in the latest version of any distro. I've tried compiling the latest kernel and xorg from git and problem still exists :(

I think you should rename the title of the bug to something like "Touchpad and trackpoint glitches on Synaptics multi-touch touchpads." I've been able to reproduce this on a Lenovo Thinkpad W520 and also a Dell Studio 1555, both of which have a Synaptics 7.2 multi-touch touchpad.

I have copied /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf
This solved detecting pointing devices on system start, but other problems are still actual.

Hi everyone, most probably the acpi package is causing this issue. I was thinking when this started to happening as initially when I installed the system everything was ok, now I've removed acpi package and everything seems ok. I'll test more, but for now it seems that removing acpi resolved this issue.
