Attenuate applications does not work.

- Freshly installed Ubuntu 12.04 alpha2 (so obviously using pulseaudio as default)
- Mumble 1.2.3-2ubuntu-2

The options "while other users talk" and "while you talk" are greyed out. I can still move the slider but it doesn't make any difference.

This feature is not available in 1.2.3 on Linux, so the real "bug" is that the slider is not disabled. It's implemented in the current Git version and should work there.

What do you mean that "it should work there" ? The fact that the slider is disabled or the attenuation itself?

I think they mean that the right behavior is that everything should be
disabled. The checkboxes and the slide should be disabled because that
feature isn't available for Ubuntu.

The fix they mention is that they made everything disabled... :-(

IMO, "it should work there" = The fact that the slider is disabled

No, attenuation should work in current git master (with PulseAudio). Someone submitted a patch to implement it.
