I just tried reproducing this on my up to date feisty machine and a G450 card, and it seemed to work fine for me without any crashes. I set the resolution to 1024x768, and it was set correctly when I logged back in.

I still have this crash after signing on. I tried to change my resolution
but when I want to open the display settings in "System Settings" then
"System Setting" crashes as well. Additionally I have now problems with the
update manager that has problems committing some changes. I suspect some
graphic related packages to cause this.

I now managed to install the updates by booting into the shell and using aptitude. However, the updates did not change the crashing behaviour. If this is of any help: I run my Matrox G450 in a Dual Monitor setup where both monitors are set to a resolution of 1280x1024.

That is quite interesting information. Can I get you to also attach your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to this bug as well. Then I should stand a good chance of reproducing this problem.

Here is the requested xorg.conf file. I hope it helps.
