Tested in Dapper, Edgy and Feisty.
All 3 would hang while trying to open the file.

Hi Chris Burgan,

Thank you for your time to test it. This file opens in Microsoft Powerpoint and even on openoffice (the windows version).

There must be something wrong...

hmmmm... it is a bit strange! Have you any idea what caused the delay?

Chris, Brian, please could you forward this to upstream after checking an upstream build?

Thanks, Matthias

If I try to open a PowerPoint file with an embedded Excel graph, it freezes - but opens the file after a while (15-20 min.)

OK we have a problem with opening ppt file. I had it to day on Feisty and Ooo 2.2 with a ppt file that came from a windows PC .
What I can do? can I go back to the older Open Office or to Edgy?

Oh I forgot to mention how long it took for it to open for me. It took 69s which is a lot faster than for Brian at 1.5h so perhaps OpenOffice 2.3.0 now loads the file faster. Or it may be due to the amount of ram/swapping that it may take on some people's machines. I have 2GB of ram on my machine.

Still slow compared to Powerpoint. I will check it out again with Ubuntu
7.10 and let you know. I have a P4 3GHZ HT 2048MB Ram.

P4 640 (3.2GHz), OCZ 3GB 4-4-4-12 @ 667MHz, 250GB WD SATA-150, nVidia GeForce 6800 (256MB), etc.

I don't think these numbers mean much, but I like statistics too:

$ time ooffice -writer AGM\ Presentation\ Local\ Markets\ 2007.ppt

real 3m41.495s
user 0m0.176s
sys 0m0.160s

I've yet to test this file with OpenOffice.org in Windows and Microsoft PowerPoint in Windows but will report back as soon as I do.

I think the best thing to do would be report this upstream. I hope someone has and just hasn't added it to the bug report...

Hi, I checked it out again. There is a big improvement in time although
still slow. It took 2mins 56 seconds to open the file.

Then I tried to save it to OpenOffice format and it crashed!!!

Can you please try it out yourself to check if this happens to you as well?

Cheers.

Noel

Yes I can confirm the crash when trying to save the document to OpenOffice format.

Confirmed on openoffice.org 1:2.4.0~rc2-1ubuntu3 but not on the upstream 2.4.0~rc2. So it is either due to ooo-build change or java/compilation issue.

I'm not sure if this is the same problem. The attached file opens OK in edit mode, but the slideshow consumes all available RAM and swap space. (Slideshow is fine under MS Windows XP and Open Office 2.3.1, so it appears to be an Ubuntu/Linux issue)

I can reproduce this on multiple ubuntu hardy installations. I also question the priority as it makes the ubuntu open office package unuseable for us.
