Bug Description

Hi!
Nautilus, when working on files within connected USB memory stick /flash or hardrive/, when a folder/file is selected and "delete" key pressed, files aren't deleted but moved into hidden .trash directory- which isn't deleted when drive is unmounted- also those "hidden" files occupy space on drive, which isn't visible when you choose still visible files /just to know, how much space is left etc/. that can cause a confusion /yes, i know you can manually delete .trash folder from usb drive, but- why?/.
proposed solution? if device isn't locally connected /but is usb or esata etc/ than files should be deleted permanently- i.e. user should get a warning like "you are going to delete your files permanently. you won't be able to recover them. continue? y/n".
also, those memory sticks should be connected with "sync" option- so manual unmounting /i.e. with mouse, not via command/ them wouldn't be that necessary /it would shorten the time for 'ejection' of disks mounted/.

bet regards
simon

Question from upstream:

"When unmounting, don't you get a popup asking whether to empty the trash folder
on the USB stick?"

no, it doesn't. and even if it would- i'd still consider it as a "bug" (well... like "paper-cut-like bug" not like something critical)- under other operating system (i'm thinking about MS's product) there is (usually) no need to unmount it /i.e. they mounts usb drives with 'sync' option- at least at xp sp2 and newer systems) that behaves in different way- although i do understand, that if something is popular doesn't make it wright, but Ubuntu is targeted to the less- technical people /well... tech savvy people can use it of course!/, and behavior mentioned by me would be a "surprise" /i.e. not copying files on usb even if nautilus indicates that they are copied- but in fact saving them during unmount/. at least making it configurable would be a nice option :)

cheers,
simon

it's a duplicate bug, nautilus is supposed to ask if you want to empty the bin at eject time

shouldn't it rather just delete files? After all- after i copy files on usbstick, when the "copying files" dialog is gone- i expect them to be copied; I see no reason why I should "eject" that stick.

On the contrary, why isn't it a good thing having a trash folder, instead of immediate delete? If you consider the trash folder for your main drive is good, why not for a usb drive as well? Behaviour should be consistent, so that's it's easier to learn, easier to predict.
