Is this reproducible across a removal of ~/.vlc ?

Tried removing ~/.vlc it had no effect on the problem. Also tried logging in as a new user just in case theming etc had messed with vlc in some way. This also had no effect.

Me too I got this problem when I made the last update to 0.8.6.release-0ubuntu3 for Ubuntu feisty. The volume applet simply has disappeared. The volume control remain available, anyway, by keyboard shortcut. Tried changing kde theme (plastik, keramik, ecc.) but doesn't work.

UPDATE:

instead of an "apt-get install vlc" from the universe repo, i tried to compile from source with "apt-get -b source vlc". Now the volume control is available and effective, but the applet i estetically imperfect.
I run kubuntu in a amd sempron with a custom 2.6.19 kernel.

Hi,

That's a wxwidgets 2.8 problem.
When VLC 0.8.6 was released wxwidgets 2.8 was not out or has just been for a while, so VLC's interface has been coded with 2.6 in mind. ( to be honest i'm surprised it even compiled with 2.8)

So it's either a bug in wxwidgets, sth wrong in vlc code or a workaround a 2.6 bug which is no longer needed and cause this placement problem.

Same thing. Fortunately shortcuts still work.

Is someone working on that bug ?

The priority of that bug is fixed to "low". I don't think it should. There is a lot of people of there using VLC and it will be a very bad thing for feisty to have a buggy vlc (even though it's graphical, that's the first thing final users see ) .

Will libwxgtk2.6 be in feisty ?

If yes it can be an easy solution

Sure, I can revert the libwxgtk2.8-dev build-dep to libwxgtk2.6-dev in the next upload. There were mumblings that using wxWidgets 2.8 resolved the full screen issue, however, and I've lacked time to chase the svn commits.

Sorry, I forgot to specify that I'm a Kubuntu user, and the problem is not limited to gnome... look at the screenshot.

From bug 84098: "I can confirm this on x86 from repos; in fact, I think it broke when I did the following upgrade of vlc packages:

Commit Log for Tue Mar 20 12:55:23 2007
Upgraded the following packages:
libvlc0 (0.8.6.release-0ubuntu3) to 0.8.6.release-0ubuntu4
vlc (0.8.6.release-0ubuntu3) to 0.8.6.release-0ubuntu4
vlc-nox (0.8.6.release-0ubuntu3) to 0.8.6.release-0ubuntu4

as it was just working the other day! :)

(I'm using Feisty from the repos, BTW)

This is an unfortunate side effect of reverting to wxwidgets2.6. See bug 91248."
