Bug Description

After upgrading to kernel 3.0.0-15, HP EliteBook 2540p comes up with a blank screen. I appears to be a problem with the graphics or ACPI, because entering the password blindly at the blank screen results in disk activity which matches that during normal login. Kernel 3.0.0-14 boots without any problems.

I can boot 3.0.0-15 if I choose recovery mode from the GRUB menu, then pick the options to boot normally. I am guessing that this is somehow related to the additional graphics mode changes.

In case this is relevant, this notebook has an SSD (race condition?)

When booting into 3.0.0-15 via recovery mode (picked "resume normal boot" in the first dialog), I also get the error from Bug #651104 and Unity comes up in unaccelerated 2D mode. Again, this can be fixed by going back to 3.0.0-14.

I can suspend and resume at the blank screen I get after normal boot, but the screen remains blank with no cursor after resume.

@Krzysztof

And if you boot back into 3.0.0-14 there is no issue?

This could be a duplicate or related to bug 904569

Krzysztof,
could you please test the latest kernel in oneiric-updates (3.0.0-15.25)?

I am experiencing the same issue here on an Dell Latitude E6510.
The last kernel in oneiric-updates does not work either.

The 3.0.0-15.25 kernel is the one causing the trouble for me.

Using the 3.0.0-14.23 kernel, the HP Elitebook 2540p boots normally without a problem, but when booting with the 3.0.0-15.25 kernel, the screen also goes blank for me. I thought at first the problem may be that it thinks a second monitor as the main one so I plugged a second monitor in. The second monitor actually show the login screen but as soon as you log in, the screen on that monitor also went blank.

I to have this problem also on the HP elitebook 2540p... Now going back to 3.0.0-14 (chosing, safe mode -> resume normal boot also works for me, but I rather have a system that just boots)

I have the same problem with my Sony Vaio Z13. It works great with last kernel 3.0.0-14 but boot with a "black screen" since the first kernel 3.0.0-15.
My laptop got dual graphics card (Intel/nvidia) but I always use the intel one.

Same problem here on a Dell Latitude E6510 after 3.0.0-14 -> 3.0.0-15 upgrade. Laptop screen is not working anymore, but external screen is still working.

I'd like to perform a kernel bisect to identify the commit that caused this issue. I'll build a test kernel and post a link to it shortly.

This actually appears to be a duplicate of bug 919350. I am currently bisecting and building test kernels for that bug. It would be great if folks commenting on this bug could test the kernels I post to that bug.

I'll mark this bug as a duplicate of 919350 for now. We can un-dup it if we find the solution to bug 919350 doesn't resolve this bug as well.

Here never hadd a problem with 11.10. Since update to kernel 3.0.0-15 No boot anymore even not in recovery mode .
Udev time out. Usung sdd drives.

Totally unable to boot anything into ubuntu anymore. Other os ok. kernel 3.0.0-14 is not present into boot menu. anymore.(grub2)

I think the upgrade does something wring with initramfs does have nothing to do with graphics.

PLEASE REMOVE KERNEL 3.0.0-15 update !!!!!!!

I'm now trying to recover trough live cd and update manually the boot.cfg

Hello, Sorry Sorry,

I do have a stuck HD (2 TB from WD). It just happened by coincidence just after upgrade.

That's why I did not boot any more. By removing the specific HD it's ok.

My prob did not had to do with any other here, it's hardware related
