Hi Trent, could you check the disk for errors? This option is available on the first screen after booting to the live media.

Were you still able to access Vista after the installation? How about Ubuntu?

I could access Vista on the primary drive after the install in any of the attempts. It loads the boot loader fine and it works. I am starting to think the secondary hard drive has failed. I tried another install last night with no updates and it worked. However it will not boot up on that drive. Vista is again working. I am going to try a new secondary hard drive later today.

I installed a new hard drive and it installed in about 20 minutes an worked fine. It was taking about 2 hours to install on old corrupt drive. I thought about this a few days ago as ubuntu 10.40 just quit and would not boot. Thanks

So that's what's causing the problem. I guess we can agree that this is not an installer bug but a hardware error. If yes, I'll convert this to a question and request you to mark it as closed.

On the other hand, you can still check the erratic hard drive for bad blocks using this command: sudo badblocks -n -v /dev/sdx (sda1, etc). If it also mounts to the already installed Ubuntu, open Disk Utility and look for the SMART status.
