I rebooted my pc but the problem is still there.

I got a message from update notifier that I have 3 updates available (as before), I selected show updates and then install updates, after about a minute got the same screen and no updates installed, I cicked on install updates again, I had to wait about 5 minutes and got same error as before.

I do not understand exactly why but I seem to have solved the problem running the following commands from terminal as root user (after havint done what said in #4 yesterday):
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get dist-upgrade
apt-get autoclean
apt-get autoremove

No, what said in #6 is not correct.
After running another apt-get update, I got update notifier notifying me that I had 2 updates to install, but when I tried to install them with update manager, I got the same problem that it does not install the updates.
So I tryed in terminal as root user:
apt-get upgrade

and the updates got installed, looks like I can only install updates from command line.

It seems like a problem back from dist upgrade. In such cases running apt-get dist-upgrade should normally fix that. However if this problem keeps coming back for you then please report back here attaching your /var/log/apt/history.log and term.log and we'll try to investigate further.

In your term.log I can see nvidia related error:

Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 3.2.0-3-generic (x86_64)
Consult /var/lib/dkms/nvidia-173/173.14.30/build/make.log for more information.

We should try to eliminate this one before going any further. Please remove proprietary driver that you downloaded from nvidia and try using nvidia-current delivered in ubuntu repositories.

Also please try reinstalling the packages that can't be updated wither using synaptic or with apt-get install 'appname' --reinstall

I removed proprietary driver nvidia-173:amd64 and left nvidia-current (it was already installed).
I got a message from update notifier for 3 updates available, I clicked on show updates and then install updates, I was not prompted for my password, after about 5 minutes update manager displayed the same updates again and the install updates button was available again but nothing was installed.

I ran apt-get update, apt-get upgrade, I always get the following packages kept back: glib-networking ia32-libs.
I ran apt-get dist-upgrade and also here the same two packages are always kept back.
So I ran apt-get insall glib-networking --reinstall, and it got reinstalled.
When I tried apt-get install ia32-libs --reinstall I got this output:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 ia32-libs : Depends: ia32-libs-multiarch
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

As I had other 13 updates to install, I ran apt-get update again and tried to use update-manager to update those 13 updates, this time I was promted for my password, but after a minute, the install updates button wasn't grey anymore and available but no update was installed.
So I tried apt-get upgrade, got the message that the following packages have been kept back:
  gir1.2-rb-3.0 ia32-libs librhythmbox-core4 poppler-utils rhythmbox rhythmbox-plugin-cdrecorder
  rhythmbox-plugins
Then I entered apt-get dist-upgrade, the previous packages kept back got installed but the following package got kept back:
  ia32-libs.

Well Carla this is perfectly normal for alpha-1 release stage. Simply not all packages are available on time in the repositories. You just have to wait for the correct version to get released. This is not a bug and as I said it is to be expected in testing so marking this as invalid.

Hello Lukasz,
I think you misunderstood the problem.
The problem is not that some packages do not get installed, but that if I have some updates (in the last case they were 13) I cannot get them installed using update manager, I have to use apt-get.
It does not matter if 2 of the 13 packages do not get installed, but the other 11 simply are not installed using update manager , that's the real problem.

It happened again with 60 updates that showed up in the update notifier.
I selected show updates, then clicked on install updates, I was prompted for my password, the update-manager went gray, after a minute everything became normal again but the 60 updates weren't installed, so I clicked on install updates again, but after 5-6 minutes got the error in the attached image.
After this I ran as root:
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get dist-upgrade
and all the updates got installed.

So concluding I can only install updates with apt-get and not with update-manager.

I tried to reinstall update manager:

apt-get install update-manager --reinstall

but first I got a crash, reported in bug #903328, then after rebooting I get a notification (yellow/orange sun in notification area) but I can't do anything, if I select show updates, nothing happens, if I select install updates, nothing happens, If I select preferences, nothing happens.

If I run as root:
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get dist-upgrade

updates get installed.

After reporting the update notifier bug, without closing update-manager, I clicked on check, got one update to do.
I clicked on install updates it took about 3 minutes but after coming back from the gray state the update was not installed and the update-manager still showed me the same previous update to install.
I'm attaching a screen-shot of update-manager and the update it does not install.
I'm sure that if I run apt-get update and apt-get upgrade this update will be installed as I am doing latey after having encounterd this bug.

Its likely that this is a duplicate of bug 894671 and will be resolved if you install the latest version of aptdaemon using apt e.g. sudo apt-get install aptdaemon. In the event that this fixes your issue please mark this bug as a duplicate of bug 894671.

aptdaemon is already the newest version.
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  lib32bz2-1.0 lib32ncurses5
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

I already have the latest version.

Now I have the current situation:

- update notifier: if I click on it and select "show updates", "install all updates" or "check for updates" nothing happens.
- update manager: everything seem ok, I can check for updates and install them.

What should I do? mark this bug a duplicate of bug 894671 ?
For the update notifier must I open a new bug ?
