didn't see this crash yet. Please could you add some more information:

 - are fglrx or nvidia drivers installed?
 - if yes, does removing these and using the free drivers lets OOo start?
 - is Compiz/Beryll used?

nvidia closed source drivers as downloaded with
apt-get for ubuntu.

never tried to remove them as it will break some
software.

never used compiz. as a matter of fact didn't even
know it does exist.

I asked you to temporarily disable the nvidia driver and use the nv driver;
what's wrong with that? but maybe somebody else has the energy to make this
temporary change...

I update almost daily. My current version is
2.2.0-1ubuntu3 and it seems to be fine.
