Hello Lynne,

Have you had any luck using Synaptic to get around the problem? What error message did the update manager give you?

Regards Jason.

*It said your Server was down or software source was not up to date or
third party source was not from you . . I got what I thought was about
90 % with the synaptic package manager and Mark ALL UPDATES and clicked
Apply . . will find out more in a few days when it says I need updates
again

Hi Lynne,

Thankyou for the feedback. I should have read your post more closely, I would have noticed you had already specified the error, it's getting late where I am and I need to go to bed!

Did you get the error when you clicked "Check" in the update manager? Were just doing a normal update of the current system or are you trying to update to a new release? What is the current release you are running? Are you comfortable using the terminal at all?

Regards Jason

Thanks for that Lynne. Since this happens for both cases can you please attach the following log files to see if we can spot any issues.

In the directory "/var/log/dist-upgrade" there are three files, "main.log", "apt.log" and "term.log" can you attach a copy of each of these.

In "/var/log/apt" there is a file called "term.log" attach a copy of that to please.

Maybe there is a logged error in these files that might help identify the issue. Has this problem happened before or this the first time?

Lynne thankyou for the history.log, by the look of it you got some of the updates you were after. I'm not sure why you can't access the logs I mentioned.

What release are you running, I'm guessing 10.10 by looking at the history log?

Do you know the administrative/root password for the system?

Did you try to navigate to the var directory using the file manager? (you'll need to look under the "filesystem" in the file manager).

do you know how to the use the command line?

Thankyou for the information you have provided so far. Please if you could answer the above questions it will help trying to work out what is going wrong.

Regards Jason.

I hope I know the admin password I have to type it to sign into the
computer ( Its my Laptop ) and have to use it to start Firestarter (
firewall ) plus I have to type it in to use synaptic package manager and
some packages when installing them
from the Ubuntu resource center . . . I have used Root at times to get
things done . .
The version 11.xx has forgotten that laptops have different key boards
than a desktop ! ! . . I have lost the mouse in 11.10 and had to push
the power button and restart
Secondly I do not like the icons floating around and moving around
sliding off screen only in 11.04 is there a setting for classic Ubuntu
in 11.10 they did not add it . . Some one must think I want all that
crap on my screen . . I like it as it is a clean window there are only 4
icons on my desktop Quicken ( in wine ) a windows share folder a folder
with 3-D home design ( a Home depot windows program for making drawing
of home insides I use it for making drawers, shelves, and other wooden
item ) and a folder with stuff from my camera's I used for making a
movie and putting on Youtube
I did add firestarter, System Monitor, Virus scan, ABI, and thunderbird
to the tool bar as they get used a lot . .

And the File manager will not let me open it either come up I have to
get to the file via Root only !

Thankyou Lynne for the extra info.

My apologies for asking about the root password, It should have clicked when you said you used Synaptic. I asked because I want you to run an "apt-get update" in the terminal. This will print out all the sources/repos apt is using to get your updates and other applications. Since you are having trouble getting to the logs this is a quick way of getting some more info. Please do the following

Open a terminal.

At the prompt type: "sudo apt-get update" (without the comments)

You should get a long list printed out in the terminal. Copy the list and past it up here. There may be some errors in the /etc/apt/sources.list file causeing the errors your getting.

Regards Jason.

Thankyou Lynne that has cleared up the problem. Your missing the gpg keys your system uses to verify the repository before it gets packages to update with. This is designed to ensure you get the proper packages form a known signed source. To fix this we need to import the keys for each repo into your system. Please follow the steps below to do this.

Using the terminal again do (without the quote)

"sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 16126D3A3E5C1192 40976EAF437D05B5"

then

"sudo apt-get update"

Hopefully this will eliminate the errors you have been getting.

Regards Jason.

Okay Lynne well try it this way. Copy each line into the terminal and press enter after each line.

gpg --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv 3E5C1192
gpg --export --armor 3E5C1192 | sudo apt-key add -

gpg --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv 437D05B5
gpg --export --armor 437D05B5 | sudo apt-key add -

suod apt-get update

This should import the keys and hopefully fix the problem.
