Bug Description

Toshiba Satellite L775D-S7340 reboots during shutdown.

When I shutdown my machine when running the default kernel for Linux Mint 11 and the default kernel for Ubuntu 11.10, the machine reboots instead of halting.

I am currently running Linux drawork01 3.0.0-12-generic #20-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 7 14:56:25 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I have the problem even without the fglrx driver. I can uninstall it and re-run

    sh scripts/ver_linux

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . If possible, please test the latest v3.2-rcN kernel (Not a kernel in the daily directory). Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag(Only that one tag, please leave the others). This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed by the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream-KERNEL-VERSION'. For example, if kernel version 3.2-rc1 fixed and issue, the tag would be: 'kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.2-rc1'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Thanks in advance.

Same problem, running Ubuntu 11.10. Updated the kernel last night* and the issue still persists.

*(I believe it updated to 3.0.0-13-generic, but I'm not at my computer right now to verify)

@jsalisbury: I tried the 3.2-rc2(i386) kernel, but get no graphics at all - just a black screen with the backlight on - after selecting it in GRUB. I assume it's missing the proper graphics driver for the AMD A6, but I don't know how to add it.

Also, from this black screen-state, pressing the power button does power the computer off, but it immediately reboots, so I suspect the problem exists in that kernel as well.

I downloaded the source for 3.1.1 from kernel.org and built and installed a new kernel. The problem still persists. When I get a chance I will try the latest mainline build.

Is anyone still working on this? This also causes issues with sleep/hibernate.

Also, just to clarify the issue for anyone looking into it, the automatic reboot only happens when the power adapter is connected and plugged in - if it's unplugged or not connected (running off the battery only) shutdown is normal, but if it's plugged in the machine reboots both with and without the battery connected.

I may have found a fix. I did the sleep/hibernate fix and the keyboard/touchpad fixes found <a href="https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Toshiba_Satellite_L775D_S7340">at this site</a>, and powering off seems to work normally now.

I think the key part was the keyboard/touchpad solution of adding "i8042.nomux=1 i8042.reset" to the kernel line in GRUB (actually the "linux" line in GRUB2, IIRC). Before I did that, it restarted on me once when I put it to sleep. Of course, the keyboard wouldn't work so I had to reboot and lost the session, but after I added that to GRUB2 I haven't had the problem again, either with sleep or shutting down completely.

I'll leave it to those more knowledgeable than me to figure out how turn this into a "release ready" fix.

David, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.

Christopher,

I no longer have the machine in question in my possession. Maybe someone else subscribed to this defect can try your suggestions.

Thank you,

Tested with linux-image-3.4.0-999-generic_3.4.0-999.201205160409_amd64.deb. Bug reoccured.

Machine reboots rather than shutting down.

Hello, I am running a Toshiba Satellite L775-S7108 Laptop using the AMD64 Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I am also unable to shut down via the Terminal using the normal shutdown command or the suggested (gnome-session-quit --power-off) in my question. And the GUI dialogs for shutdown are the same. My laptop only restarts.

Link to my question: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-session/+question/201898

Since I am very new to ALL Linux OS's I have yet to learn the terms used by everyone.
