Bug Description

I know it seems awkward to introduce a change in meaning for an existing icon, but I had earlier thought of
this, and honestly cannot find anything better, if I was to draw a new one for the purpose.

Why not use "/Widelands/pics/menu_bld_bulldoze.png" for "dismantle"
 and
"/Widelands/pics/genstats_civil_blds_lost.png" for the meaning of "burn down"?

It will confuse people for a short while that the former "destroy" button now dismantles, but no harm is done this way.
You can always press the burn down immediately afterwards.

I am not 100% whether the bulldoze image is the best way to communicate dismantling, but I don't really have any better idea. It should have a proper icon though, and the burning building fits better for burn down. I'd suggest we leave this one open for a while in case someone comes up with a better idea how to represent dismantle.

100% sure, if that was unclear.

had a go on this.
Here is an attempt at a new "dismantle house" icon.
It's an alpha channel transparent png and can be layered on to of any surface.

I think you are on to something here. :) Though I am not sure why you have included a person (the builder?). In my opinion, the important thing here is that the house is transformed to wares. It would also free up some space and make it look less crowded. Have you experimented with different variations of the arrow, btw?

Always interesting to see, how different we two sometimes think :)
For me the "event" that a builder comes and dismantles the building, is a major characteristic that stayed in my mind.
I haven't even thought about any icon without a person!
But I can make such a version, though I am not convinced that is a better mnemonic.
Yep, the arrow is sub optimal - I have tried different versions here, but the truth is, I'm myself
not really thrilled at this arrow.

I have tried a clearer arrow with this.
One version with, and without the dismantling builder

I like the version without a person as well. Though, I'd like to see it tweaked slightly to make it look more centered on the button. It might be an optical illusion since it doesn't have a right wall, but I think it should have slightly more space on the left side.

No, no Illusion. You're absolutely right, HJD.
Also placed a bit too low.

I'd suggest to include this in build17 cause a new feature should have a nice new icon and it shouldn't be that much work to have a look at Astuurs icon and commit it to trunk. But I really don't want to put any pressure on you Chuck!

@ Sevonar: "Pressure"... What's that? ;)

Fwiw, I've played with Astuur's icon since it was posted, and I'm really happy with it. I also agree this should be decided before build17 since the two almost identical icons representing completely different things doesn't really make a good UI. Worst case scenario, we can change it again for build 18 if some better option comes along (though we really shouldn't be switching out icons left and right between releases, lest we confuse players)

I also thinks the skull and <del>crossbones</del> tools should be replaced with something else, but there's no rush.

I concur that the graphic Astuur presents in #12, (i.e. centered and without a human figure) is very good. I also agree with hjd that the new feature which is slated for inclusion in build 17 should be presented in the best possible light with a decent icon.

Therefor, I approve Astuur's proposal and I will see that it is pushed to the trunk for inclusion in Build 17.

As for the skull and crossbones, hjd, we'll put some thought to an alternative. ;)

Thank you, everyone.
