/etc/init.d/networking script still functions

Bug Description

/etc/init.d/networking stop kills unity and makes desktop look ugly.

Furthermore, it is no longer possible to log out/shutdown the computer.

See the attached screenshot - broken panel, icons, gnome-terminal colours.

Not a bug in Unity. Though I've reproduced this successfully, Unity is not to blame for this. /etc/init.d/networking has been converted to an Upstart job, but still the old script remains (mysteriously). The old sysvinit script should be disabled.

I don't see how this would be related to whether networking is an upstart job or not, anyway, as of 12.10 it'll only be an upstart job.

The most likely problem is that networking is also bringing down the loopback device which I'm guessing part of the desktop uses for obscure reasons, that's indeed a problem but not something we should try to fix in netbase/ifupdown.
