Bug Description

I'm in Win7 64 bit, using Inkscape v0.48

When I tick "use pressure sensitive tablet" and restart, I have two issues:

1, In calligraphic mode, nothing draws. When I press the pen down the status bar does say "Drawing a calligraphic stroke" however nothing is drawn on screen. The same issue happens regardless of whether I have "Use the pressure of the input device to alter the width of the pen" selected or not.

2, In freehand/pencil mode it just goes completely bonkers, I see green straight lines flash everywhere when I try to draw; alternatively I see a very brief green line representing the first half second of the drawn line I just made. Then it vanishes. And again there is no actual line drawn as I move my pen, even though the status bar says "Drawing a freehand path".

If I turn pressure sensitivity back off, I am able to use the pad and pen to draw just fine, albeit with no fancy calligraphic stuff which I'd really like to be able to use.

Nb. the Bamboo pen and touch allows you to turn the "touch" aspect off. I have tried this, same issues still happen.

I have tried various "fixes" found through google to no avail.

A bit more info..

In "input devices" if I uncheck one of the pen or the eraser, I can draw normally. So I suspect one part of the pug is that it is trying to both draw and erase at the same time.

I have tried pairing the pen and the eraser by linking them, they then appear under a "pen" device which is under "tablet". However the same issue occurs if both pen and eraser are checked.

In either case pressure sensitive calligraphy simply will not work. Even if I only have pen selected thus can draw, pressure has no effect.

Could you please update the information about Inkscape's version with the details from 'Help > About Inkscape'?
If you have Inkscape 0.48.2 installed (which uses a newer GTK+ stack than 0.48.1 and 0.48.0), your report is probably a duplicate of

Bug #845354 in Inkscape: “Critical Wacom tablet glitches (0.48.2)”

Hi there,

Yeah it's 0.48.2 r9819

However, I'm not sure it's a duplicate. My issue is regarding the pressure sensitivity setting in particular, generally it's quite stable without that setting on though I have experienced some objects dissapearing occasionally as mentioned in the bug you've linked.

I really do think the eraser and pen are somehow conflicting in what I've seen.

Would I be able to get 0.48.1 anywhere in the meantime?

Thanks & kind regards,

Janine

You can download 0.48.1 from
<http://sourceforge.net/projects/inkscape/files/inkscape/0.48.1/>

Yes, the known regressions with 0.48.2 on Windows seem to relate to pressure sensitivity - at least based on other user reports, see for example the forum topic [1] linked to in Bug #797519 “Stylus entered coordinates are wrong”. That bug was the first one to report e.g. the issue with the wrong coordinates which match your description of issue 2, but unfortunately the reporter didn't follow up with additional information what might have changed for him - possibly he turned off pressure sensitivity.

Probably bug #845354 and bug #858593 are both duplicates of bug #797519 (regression introduced with the upgraded GTK+ stack).

Thanks for the info.

Yes it looks like all of these are related bugs. Sorry for the duplication.

I did discover one more thing of note - In input devices if I untick both the pen and eraser.. the pen still works / draws! If I tick either one, the pen works as well. If I tick both, that's when it goes crazy. In all cases no calligraphy, so I'm wondering if there are actually two issues here; one with pens that have eraser and pen functionality (it would be interesting if the other bug reporters could verify they have this kind of setup), and one where calligraphy simply does not work no matter what.

I am of course half guessing and musing out loud. :)

If I can be of further assistance let me know (I am a dev myself).

I have had issue 2 as well.

Somehow I got it to the point where that wasn't happening BUT what I am concerned about is that there is NO pressure sensitivity at a AND the eraser doesn't work - it just acts as a pencil.

I even tried installing 48.1 on another computer and got the same result.

Happy to provide any more information that might help.

Brenda

Confirmed on Windows XP, Inkscape 0.48.2. Even worse, Inkscape crashes after showing the green lights with the Pen tool.
