Bug Description

I am using Compiz 0.9.6 under Xubuntu 11.10.

If I enable the Grid plugin, and use a keyboard shortcut to resize/place a window, I can no longer use the Put-plugin to move it around on the screen. As soon as the Put plugin is done moving it (ie the move-animation is complete), it snaps back to whereever Grid placed it. I can move the window fine with the mouse, but Bug #745159 prevents me from disabling "Snap windows back to original size", so the window loses the size Grid has set for it.

Furthermore, using 'Put Center' (Ctrl-Alt-KP_5) several times to cycle through window sizes, will place the window on another display (my "primary" display, according to XFCE), with no way of moving it back, aside from dragging it, thereby losing the size set by Grid (as noted above).

This worked for me in Ubuntu Maverick with Compiz 0.8.6.

Yes this is annoying. I love the grid and put plugins, they're the main reason I find Unity/Compiz so attractive. (I also like Divvy on the Mac for the same reason.) This used to work.

Strangely things *do* work if I do a Grid > Put Left and then Put > Put to Next Output or Grid > Put Right and then Put > Put to Next Output. In those two cases the window *stays* on the target monitor. Any other put targets (e.g. 'Top left', 'Bottom', etc.) result in the window snapping back to the original monitor.

This is probably an issue with Put rather than grid, as it also affects maximized windows: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/1316651

I wrote a patch for the put plugin that fixes bounce behavior. Not sure if it fixes all behavior described in this issue.
