Bug Description

When unity tries to load, it shows only a small nautilus menu which only allows me to navigate the file system. There is no launcher and the top panel is gone. Sounds similar to bug 873599 but I am 32 bit and the problem appears to be permanent. Using Ubuntu 11.10 upgrade, compiz-core 1:0.9.6+bzr20110929-0ubuntu3 (I obtained this info from software center logged in as a different user in 2D).

Computer is a Samsung Netbook N110.

The reset process stops here. I let is sit for 15 minutes and there was no further progress. In Compiz I activated wobbly windows, then the problem occurred.

The problem here is almost certainly that you have turned off the Unity plugin when turning on the wobbly windows plugin. (Possibly this happened automatically.)

Here is how to get your desktop back:

1. Press ctrl-T to get a new tab.
2. Press ctrl-L to let you type a path, and type "/usr/bin".
3. In /usr/bin, find gnome-terminal and double-click it.
4. Now in gnome-terminal type "ccsm" and turn the Unity plugin back on.

Two possible workarounds for the future:

* Don't allow the Unity plugin to be disabled by ccsm if Unity is running-- at all. According to didrocks there was a bug about this at some point, but I can't find it now.
* Have a program that runs on login which checks whether Unity is disabled, and if it is puts up a dialogue saying "Unity is disabled; re-enable it? Yes, no, don't ask again."

Opinions as to which way we should go are welcomed.

Could you go to a console tty, log in, and type "unity --reset"? Then when you go back to tty7, let us know what it printed. If you need help doing this, let me know.

Not sure what you mean when you say 'go back to tty7.' If it is not
too difficult please send complete instructions, might save some back
and forth.

I posted the output of unity --reset. See below. Is this different?

Thanks for following up.
