cannot create bootable pendrive for Ubuntu 11.10 i386

Tried on two different computers with 11.10 (amd64) and 11.04 (amd64). In both cases usb-creator-gtk dies. The following message appears in the syslog:

Exit status of usb-creator-gtk is 1. md5sum of an iso image is OK.

Installing 11.10 amd64 Ubuntu version on the same pendrive caused no troubles.

i got the same problem on 12.04:

only when starting with "gksudo usb-creator-gtk"

it works when i start without sudo, type in the password when it is requested. but when i wait too long on bootloader installation, it fails.

when will there be a fix for this issue?

Also happens on 13.04 daily build, with dmesg saying:

This has been happening as long as I can remember, going back many versions of Ubuntu. It is still happening today for me on 13.10 AMD64:
