did you run unattended-upgrades by-hand when this error occured?

 ls -l /var/log/unattended-upgrades.log doesn't output anything. No
file. No I did not run anything.

I got the same error, also no file in the place given, but also no folder in the place given. I had recently deleted the entire content of /var/log (but before the crash) so that might explain the crash, if it presumes the folder exists.
