Bug Description

Everytime I have installed ubuntu on my Asus G51Vx, I have had no sound at first. Previously, I added 'options snd-hda-intel model=asus-mode3' to my /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf. However, with 11.10 this did not work. When speakers were plugged in, sound was still produced by the internal laptop speakers. After some research, I found that 'options snd-hda-intel model=auto' fixed my problem. I wanted to share so that others in my situation could get their sound card working.

Awesome. Thanks! I'm on an Asus N71JA and had never had any problems but after fresh install of 11.10 this didn't work correctly anymore.

It doesn't however work 100% correctly: If I plug in my headset the speaker gets muted, but pulling them out and putting them back again mutes Speaker channel and I'm left without any sound at all. But it does mute the physical speaker correctly though.

This solution is a bit weird; "auto" should according to documentation be the default value.

...and I see now that I had a different problem. My bad, but the only problem I had was that internal speaker didn't mute when headset is plugged in. It works OK now though :)

Hi and thanks for the investigation!

It looks like this fix is already implemented upstream and will be supported correctly in the next Ubuntu release. You can verify this by using the procedure here: http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/UpgradingAlsa/DKMS

(To support it in the current release, 11.10, we need to send a patch to the ubuntu kernel-team mailinglist with a specific format.)

If I send such an email, will you be available to test the fix once the next kernel is uploaded?
