Bug Description

The Sharp 19" analogue monitor is connected to Intel "sandy-bridge" graphics using DVI-I. It is detected as "Unknown" and the maximum resolution is 1024x768. The same monitor connected using D-Sub to a different PC (with Intel graphics) is detected correctly under 10.04, 10.10, 11.04 and 11.10. A Liyama 19" monitor is correctly detected on this second PC using 10.04, and is "Unknown" under 11.04. However, the correct 1280x1024 resolution is set. The problem appears to be associated with either the "sandy-bridge" graphics and/or the need to a DVI-I connector, as the motherboard has no D-Sub connector.

After further work I have discovered that the EDID data appears to be corrupted. As there is no easy way to set the desired resolution (that has been reported as a bug by others), I have set the resolution using /etc/X11/xorg.conf. This works - despite what you may read on the Web - even though I am using Intel graphics and that is using KMS. I tried setting video=VGA1:1280x1024 on the kernel command line, but that was ineffective.

You probably want to ignore this bug.

Hey tony-addyman,

Hi, thanks for reporting this issue during the development period of
Ubuntu.

I notice there's not been further comments to the bug report since the
release came out, would you mind updating us on the status of it in the
release?

Are you still able to reproduce the issue? If not, do you think the bug
report can be closed, or do you think we should continue tracking it?

I can still reproduce this issue. It happens every time I boot the PC. The problem does NOT occur with the same monitor and a different PC using 11.10, but that PC has a VGA connector on the motherboard.

The fault occurs on a PC which has a DVI-I connector when driving a monitor with a D-SUB connection. I think the problem is either related to PCs using DVI-I, or only when such PCs connect to analogue monitors - or possibly only when this particular Intel motherboard is used with an analogue monitor.

As nobody else has reported this issue I think you should close it, and use your resources elsewhere.

tony addyman, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xorg-server REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given you have already done this on a prior release, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

I no longer have this problem as the computer now has a DVI monitor
directly connected to the DVI output. When this was an issue, the DVI
output connected to a VGA monitor via a DVI-VGA adaptor, because I was
using a KVM switch with a second computer with a VGA output. Using the VGA
monitor with a PC with a VGA output didn't cause a problem.

I don't know enough about the details of monitor detection to know if it
should work with such an adaptor. As pretty well all monitor detection is
automatic nowadays, an adaptor which broke the detection process with
Windows, for example, should be unsaleable.

I only run Ubuntu, so cannot see if the DVI-VGA adaptor fails or works with
another operating system, where Linux or Windows. Unless the use of these
adaptors is something that you need to support I would close the bug
report. I thought I had already indicated this in a previous email.

Thanks for caring.

Regards

Tony Addyman
