Bug Description

When selecting HDMI digital output (RS780 Azalia controller) sound completely stops working (and if watching a video, it speeds up as it does when audio playback doesn't work). It works fine with analog playback and HDMI audio works in Ubuntu 11.04.

This was affecting me, but I found a workaround on another forum or bug somewhere:

Steps:
* Run alsamixer
* look for muted outputs
* unmute
for me it was "S/PDIF 1".

All the behaviour above matches - worked on previous ubuntu installs on the same hardware, other sound outputs worked - just not HDMI.

Still needs a bugfix I guess - so that it isn't unnecessarily muted, or at least so that it can be unmuted through the normal GUI. But a good workaround so far.

I have also tried to use alsamixer but I can't even change the S/PDIF volume. So it's probably a different issue.

I don't know if there is still someone following this, but I found out another bug thread similar to this one, but under alsa-driver package and for ATI radeon, so i'm not sure if it is a duplicate or not. I tried out the workaround suggested there and it worked on my radeon hd 4200.
