Bug Description

On the X window, I'm getting almost no screen refreshes. Clicking the mouse, pushing enter in a terminal, or sometimes just moving the mouse will trigger a screen refresh. Also, bits of window edges are left behind when dragging them aroudn.

I think this is a regression. A few days ago, I didn't have this problem, then after updating, it suddenly happened. Removing the restricted nvidia driver (current or current-updates) doesn't make any difference.

I also have a similar problem (I am running oneiric) and experienced it while using either the drivers 280.13 or the drivers from the 285 series provided by the ubuntu-x-swat.

Everything was totally fine, then, suddenly, I fired the dash, my screen blinked and I started to get terrible problems with screen refresh : to remove the residuals of a previous window or to refresh any window, I have to draw some squares with the mouse around them or press the "super" key.

I tried to remove (apt-purge) and reinstall all the nvidia packages and reinstalled the XFree with no success.

I don't have this problem while using the 173 series nvidia driver (but got different problem, though).

Now, I am using Unity 2D without any issue but hope to be able to switch back to 3D as soon as possible.

I think this bug was the same as bug 871600 and bug 871614 (that I filed). Running Unity 2D makes all the screen tearing problems go away for me. Also, most of the time I can run Unity (regular, 3D) with no problems, but every couple logins it doesn't work. The info I just uploaded is for the working state (no screen tearing or problems that I noticed).

Switching to Unity 2D does not *fix* this problem.

It merely avoids it.

I also worked around this out in Natty, by restarting the xserver after each initial login, but that trick doesn't work with Oneric.

Also, this bug has gotten much worse for me.

The screen will absolutely not update unless a click of some kind is made on a window's title bar or another window. Rotating the cube also works and shows a glitch, replicating the current screen on all sides for a split second.

This makes menus impossible to use since you never know what you're clicking (the buttons only appear after clicking somewhere in the invisible menu).

This makes the desktop useless as well.

Unity 2D & Metacity still function but can't make up for the features of compiz+unity

In my case, I have found this bug to be connected to vsync.

After looking in details on this webpage (http://forum.compiz.org/viewtopic.php?t=12048), I made different trials while enabling vsync from nvidia-settings or from compiz-settings-manager or from both.

So far, I have only enabled compiz-settings-manager vsync mode and set the display refresh rate at 60Hz (the value of my computer) while turning-off the automatic detection of the refresh rate in ccsm.

When I encounter (more and more regularly) the problem of screen refresh reportednin this bug, I start the benchmark (found in ccsm) in console mode. The problem immediately disappears (but at the expense of high cpu consumption).

In a previous installation of Natty and then Oneric I was unable to find any cause for this issue.

After formating (again) and reinstalling (again) because of this issue (again) it didn't come back.

Until I set "override application settings" for anti-aliasing in nvidia-settings.

Not sure if there's a connection, as I have other custom options and overclocking.

Removing an (old) .nvidia-settings-rc from my home-directory solved the problem for me.
