Bug Description

The attached patch fixes a problem with Speakers and Headphones being assigned the same DACs with some configurations. The problem makes both Headphones volume control the Speaker volume as well. (And the other way around.)

Upstream has fixed this in 3.1 as a part of a much larger patch set (see e g commit 3af9ee6b83) which is probably not suitable for back-porting into 3.0.

@david,

Do you have plans to SRU this patch?

So I admit I wrote this patch and then forgot about it :-/

To answer with a counter-question: I'd like to SRU it, but what do you think the odds would be of the kernel team taking it? I don't have the affected hardware here.

I think there is a very good chance we'll take it. We would like to see some community testing and I'd be happy to produce some test kernels if that would help.

Before I dive in and compile a kernel to try this out - will this provide separate volume controls for speakers and headphones? (So that I know what success looks like :-) )

Success should look like the absence of the symptoms described in bug 852915 and bug 927552 :-)

I don't think this is fixed in 12.04.

I have an asus G73Sw and when I tried the Live CD, headphones didn't work.
When I upgraded from 11.10 (where everthing was working fine) I could not get it work by fooling around with the sound control under preferences. but it would not persist across a reboot. Since then I've performed a fresh install and I can only get my onboard speakers to work. And no headphone output at all when I plug the head phone jack in, even though sound control acknowledges that the headphones are plugged in.

I'm thinking about filing a big against 12.04 but wanted to do my research first. It is annoying as my external speakers are driven via my headphones jack.
