Bug Description

Internet stops working when connected to wifi. Requires me to try to reconnect, but it keeps trying to connect to wifi and never connects. Then it asks for password, but does not connect even after submitting the right password. Resetting the modem allows one to re-connect but it again stops after some time. Wifi worked correctly in natty but problem occurs since upgrade to oneric. Similar problem occured in natty when i started using the backports for wifi. Reverting the backports fixed the issue in natty, but no solution seems possible in oneric.

I seem to be having the same problem, just posted a bug report today. Question what kind of security are you using with your wireless, and what type of router are you using?

This is possibly due to an issue at the network level, for instance with the router. Please see if when you're connected and the traffic no longer passes, what goes in and out of each interface eth0 and wlan0:

sudo tcpdump -i wlan0
sudo tcpdump -i eth0

I think you'll be able to see traffic going out of eth0, and back in through wlan0 which would be incorrect.

no this does not occur when eth0 is connected. But when laptop s connected through wifi, it disables the router. Router needs to be restarted after this to connect to network again. But this only happens with Ubuntu Oneric ad started occuring after upgrade to oneric.

Again definitrly no eth0 and wlan0 issue. I checked the traffic. Also the router stops working for other computers too.

So does this happen only when both eth0 and wlan0 are connected at the same time? If so, this is basically bug 856333.

No it does not. I think the reason you are confused about eth0 is that you see it in the stack trace. But I couldn't have submitted the trace with wfi only, as the internet does not work. So, when internet stopped working through wifi, I attached eth0 to submit the bug.

Again saying it has nothing to do with eth0 and wlan0. It is wifi bug introduced in oneric.

Brad Figg (brad-figg) wrote : Test with newer development kernel (3.0.0-12.20)

Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report on this issue.

However, given the number of bugs that the Kernel Team receives during any development cycle it is impossible for us to review them all. Therefore, we occasionally resort to using automated bots to request further testing. This is such a request.

We have noted that there is a newer version of the development kernel than the one you last tested when this issue was found. Please test again with the newer kernel and indicate in the bug if this issue still exists or not.

If the bug still exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Confirmed. If the bug no longer exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Fix Released.

Thank you for your help, we really do appreciate it.

I have tested with upstream release linux-image-3.1.0-0301rc9-generic_3.1.0-0301rc9.201110050905_amd64.deb, and this kernel does not seem to have this bug.

So, looks like this issue is only with the current Ubuntu kernel or patches.

Found other users have the same issue http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1849013. Also on working with kernel 3.1 rc 10 found that the new kernel does not kill the firmware but the wifi connection slows down to a crawl. That means the problem still persist.

Vipul, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.12

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
