Mplayer hangs while attempting to reproduce a smb:/ file

Doesn't give any output. (the command was automatically generated by KMplayer)

Mplayer and VLC for that matter, won't play over a smb share in Edgy or Feisty. The only way I could ever get them working was to do a nfs share. Totem will play over smb, but often with reduced performance (video stumbling, etc.)
