Bug Description

Description: Ubuntu 11.04
Release: 11.04
Version: 0.13.3-0ubuntu6 (rhythmbox).

3) I plugged in my iPod and selected rythmbox as the program to open it in.
It asked me to initialize the iPod. I selected the model: Nano Touch (6th generation) -> 8GB Green
Put in a random name 'Apod' and clicked Initialize

At this point I assumed it would initialize and then let me put music on it.

4) It produced the error box: Unable to initialize new iPod Unspported checksum type
After this the iPod shows up and it can be synched (there is an error with a few of the file formats which won't be added).
When I look through the iPod it shows no music, but when I look in rhythmbox it shows the 2.1Gb of music added.

I was able to resolve this by initializing my iPhone using iTunes:

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #> and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

This still happens in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS: My wife got a brand new Apple iPod nano touch as a birthday present.
Rhythmbox says when trying to initialize the device: "Unsupported checksum type".
The device is visible though and it is possible to browse the directory structure in file manager.
Is there any known workaround to copy the music files from her Ubuntu computer onto the iPod?
