For the problem of not reinstalling 8.17:

Uninstall calibre
Remove program files\calibre

reinstall calibre

Your library settings/books won't be touched (assuming your library is not in program files\calibre or one of the sub-directories).

Afterwards, you can reinstall calibre.
Possibly you have to reinstall plugins and change the settings of these plugins as desired

Thanks! I'll uninstall 8.18 and reinstall 8.17.

I've been updating every new version of Calibre for 6 months moths and have
never had this issue before.

I hope next Calibre version can be fixed to delete the previous day's
newsfeeds as it formerly did.

Thanks again!

When you say calibre doesn't delete the previous days news, what do you mean?
You mean from the calibre library? Because that still works for me, if I set
max issues to 1. calibre never deleted news from a device. Some readers, like
the Kindle automatically archive old news issues after a week. But that's the
only on device news deleting behavior I am aware of.

 status incomplete

Changed in calibre:
status: New → Incomplete

What I should have said is that, on my Kindle 3, Calibre 8.18, doesn't
overwrite the previous day's RSS newsfeed as it formerly did.

Perhaps Amazon made Kindle changes the same day I updated to Calibre 8.18.

It's as if every new daily newsfeed edition is labeled differently than the
day before, thereby causing Kindle to recognize the new file as a whole new
newsfeed and not replacing the one from the previous day.

I DL 8 feeds every day and I just noticed 4 of them (1 custom & 3 stock
Calibre feeds) caused the issue this morning, so it isn't every feed. The 3
problematic stock Calibre feeds are CNET News, GoComics, and USA Today.

Thank you for your concern!

calibre has always named news files sent to the kindle differently.
I'm surprised to hear that calibre was overwriting news sent to the Kindle previously, since that
is definitely not intended behavior. I suspect that the Kindle was archiving your news automatically for you,
look under archived items on the Kindle.

For 6 months, and many Calibre updates, I DL'ed newsfeeds daily and Kindle
automatically archived the previous days feeds.

Now (Calibre 8.18), the preceding day's feeds are not being archived on 4 of
the 8 feeds. (???)

When I have the time, I'm going to uninstall 8.18 and reinstall 8.17. I
don't want to do this now because I'll have to rebuild 4 custom feeds from
scratch.

OK, so you're saying that the Kindle is not auto archiving news feeds anymore. That's very different from saying calibre is not overwriting news feeds anymore, since calibre never overwrote news feeds in the first place. It's possible something changed in 0.8.18 that causes the Kindle to no longer auto archive, but since the Kindle is a closed system, I have no clue what that might be. It would help if you did some experiments. Which news downloads are still archived and which aren't? Do the ones that are archived have something in common, like say they have only a single section?

I'm guessing that the feeds you are seeing not auto archived daily will be auto-archived once a week instead. So just wait a week and they will be archived.

Merci...Thank you for your rapid response and hard work!

Thank you also for your GREAT Calibre! If I wasn't unemployed for the past
year, I would donate.

Keep up the good work. It is appreciated!

Ciao

I've made a couple of changes that *should* restore the expire time from

7 days back to 1 day. I say should as with the Kindle, it's impossible to be

What is interesting about this bug is that it wasn't happening to all the periodicals. For example, Reuters was working fine and sending old issues to the "Periodicals: Back Issues" collection. TechCrunch, however, was not, and copies were piling up for several days.

I just tested this by generating two TechCrunch and two Reuters periodicals. They all have the same date (today, 14 September). TechCrunch appears twice on the home screen, while Reuters appears only once on the home screen (the most recent one) and once in the "Periodicals: Back Issues" collection.

Yes, I've noticed that it only affects some of my RSS news feeds.

Perhaps, whatever changes, from version 8.17 to 8.18, in the news area
should be changed back the way they were.
