This looks like a crash in python itself. update-manager catches the urllib2.URLError exceptions from urllib2.

is the reproducible? can you extract a test case, which doesn't involve gtk & dbus modules?

After using update-manager -d to successfully update four days ago, I tried updating (33 packages) with the update icon and got an error....I ran it again from the terminal and received the same error dialog and the following error log on the terminal:

I will probably report this as a second separate bug , but I have included the 4 log files found in /var/log/dist-upgrade as requested by error message.

I got almost exactly the same crash when upgrading a small number (~20) of packages. Attached is the traceback. update-manager continued to run normally and completed the upgrade.

I had just changed /etc/apt/sources.list (using the Software Sources applet) to include one of these lines:

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy-updates restricted main multiverse universe
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy-proposed restricted main multiverse universe

but I forget which one. According to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash Hardy shouldn't have either of those repositories yet?

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.
