Bug Description

No gap between vertical bar and dot on lower case i at certain font sizes (16px, 18px, 20px, 22px, 24px) - at other larger sizes the gap is inconsistent.

Using it through Google Fonts - love the font - hope you can fix this.

Kind regards

Chris

Hi Nathan,

Good to hear from you - thanks for your reply.

I've experienced this running Windows 7 (Ultimate SP1), in the following browsers:

* Google Chrome (13.0.782.220 m)
* Firefox 6.0
* Safari 5.1
* IE 9.0 (9.0.8112.16421)

On a Mac, Dave (who I have cc'd) is running a Mac with OSX Lion (v10.7.1 - updated today). It looks fine in all browsers on there. But he is also seeing the same issue as me when viewed on his Windows 7 PC in all browsers (he originally spotted the issue on Chrome & Firefox on Windows 7).

Look forward to hearing from you,

Kind regards

Chris

This sounds suspiciously like a hinting issue.... But I'm not seeing it in Firefox, on Linux. Can you tell me what OS/browser combo(s) you've observed it in? That might help chase it down....

Hi Chris,

Need to beg another piece of info that might help discern the source of the trouble. Have you downloaded the .ttf from here on Launchpad? If so, I'd be curious to see if you experience the same issue with that as you do with the version served over HTTP. I believe if you install the font locally, you can simply revisit the same pages in the browser, and the browsers will load the local copy rather than the remote one.

Hi Nate,

Sadly no joy - it's the same with the downloaded version.

I've checked using Chrome developer tools to be sure the locally installed font was being used, then uninstalled the font locally again and confirmed Chrome was loading the font over the net. Result is the same both ways.

Kind regards

Chris

Well, I'm still not sure how to verify whether this is a bug in the hinting or in the Windows renderer. But we're about to release 0.4, so at that time we'll need to re-check everything anyway.

Lower case "i" and lower case "j" are both constructed the same way (referenced from dotless variants + the dotaccent), so it doesn't make sense that they would render differently.

Hi Chris. I just pushed through the 0.4 release. It is probably worth checking to see whether you still find the same issues with the i/j gap, and if so, at what sizes. I followed some modified guidelines on the hinting / instructing process from the Google Web Fonts project wiki; if there is still trouble with rendering on Windows, we may see if ttfautohint is able to help.

Thanks,
Nate

Related problem--but slightly different--with i and j showing up now. Rendering okay on my machines running Leopard and Lion, and latest versions Chrome, Firefox, Safari. Problem when running Snow Leopard. Dot on lower case i and j missing at some sizes, dropping below and to the left of the downstroke on others. Perhaps a Google issue. Others also experiencing. See Google font directory issue 131. Requests to Google to investigate going unanswered.
