Bug Description

TEST CASE
1. Open the dash by either clicking on the 'Ubuntu start' icon or by pressing the super key.
2. Search for terminal, click terminal icon to launch it. (you have to click as due to another bug hitting enter does not work)
3. Now again open the dash.

WHAT HAPPENS
The last written search term is shown in the search box and the 'searching' spinner is still spinning.

WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN
When the dash is reopened the search box should be empty.

I also reported this bug. Here's my bug description from the duplicate...

This week's new dash keeps the search entry state even when the Dash is closed. I think this is supposed to be a helpful new feature but at the moment it is very frustrating.

Use case
Joe is an extreme Unity power user, having been an active user since May 2010! To launch gedit, he presses the Ubuntu (meta) key on his keyboard and types "ged", then the down arrow key then enter. After playing with gedit for about 5 minutes, he tries to launch a terminal by pressing the Ubuntu key, then typing "term", then down, but wait... The Dash still has his "ged" entry but now it's "gedterm" which is very unhelpful.

Expected result
Once an app is launched (or a file or song or whatever is opened), the search entry field should clear.

After a certain amount of time, say 2 minutes, of the dash being kept unopened, the search entry field should clear anyway because the user will likely have lost interest in whatever he failed in his attempt to find. It would be quite jarring to see the search result from last week still there after a holiday vacation. I think keeping the search entry for a brief amount of time is useful (although markedly different from what other app launchers do) in case the user accidentally closes the Dash.

I think a more accurate description of this problem is that when you reopen the Dash, you can't start a new search just by typing.

Clearing the search field is one way of achieving this, but it is not the only way. Another way is for the Dash to select the contents of the search field whenever it opens. Typing would replace the selection, just as it usually does.

Compared with just clearing the field, this would have three benefits:
1. If you had closed the Dash by mistake, you wouldn't need to retype the search after reopening it.
2. If you had chosen the wrong search result, you wouldn't need to retype the search after reopening the Dash.
3. If you wanted to search for something slightly different, you could edit the previous search instead of retyping it.

It would have one drawback: many people don't know that typing replaces selection, so after opening the Dash they would press Delete or Backspace (or click the Clear button) before starting their next search.

I also open the dash to select the default choices, which are not present if the search is prefilled. I need to clear it to see what I can choose.

Now the existing search term is already high-lighted when the dash is open so you can start typing as MPT suggested.

It has to do this when you close the dash without opening an application but
you have wrote something.
Normally, the Dash has to show the normal "Home" of the Dash.
