Bug Description

Binary package hint: evolution

In Evolution, it is not possible to view some mails, for example http://launchpadlibrarian.net/7982849/%28www.%20Z%20E%20E%20M%20A%20L%20L%20.com%29%20E%20C%20O%20C%20%20CU%20%20CCE.msg which have an Arabic encoding.

As part of this bug, the ISO-8859-6 encoding has been added to Evolution, which enables Evolution to open Arabic mails, but not all.

The encoding that I miss is the Arabic Windows-1252 encoding.

Thank you for your bug. What version of Ubuntu do you use? Do you have that problem only with evolution?

The desktop on which it appears is running Ubuntu 6.10.

I can not tell you if it appears in other applications since it is only one contact who writes mails with that encoding (I think that it is the Hotmail Web Interface). All other Arabic mails and applications work fine.

In Outlook, it is possible to view the mail correctly by selecting "Arabic Encoding", but in Evolution, I miss Arabic in View -> Message encoding.

I am the Tolaris from the above Ubuntu Forums post. Attached is an old, unimportant business email that is in Windows-1252 encoding. I've stripped out identifying names and addresses. I hope this helps.

Analysing that email again now, it's actually got question mark chars in it, 0x3F. I'll look for another example. I don't get many now.

See attached file.

When opening with kmail for example, the mail is not displayed correctly, but via View -> Set encoding, I can select Arabic (windows-1256) and it is displayed correctly then.

In Evolution, that encoding entry is missing in View -> Character Encoding.

Hello All,

The Arabic character set is Windows-1256 not Windows-1252, see more about character set here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/workshop/author/dhtml/reference/charsets/charset4.asp

Martin, in my system Unbuntu 7.04 still same problem - Arabic Windows-1256 characters not included in character encode menu - how can I fix this?!

magilus (magilus) wrote :

Windows-1256 are not included, this is right.

For me, the mail attached only worked selecting Windows-1256 in Outlook.

In Evolution, it is also being displayed correctly using Arabic ISO 8859-6. This also applies to other Arabic mails.

Does this work for you? If this is not the case, an example mail would be great.

I am talking about this patch: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=85207&action=view

It adds the possibility to select Arabic (ISO 8859-6) in Evolution and has already been applied to the version of Evolution in Feisty.

Fixed .debs can be found here: http://gamesplace.info/opensource/ubuntu/evolution-arabic-windows.tar.bz2 . Download the tar.gz, extract it to desktop.

Then run

cd ~/Desktop
sudo dpkg -i evolution_2.10.1-0ubuntu2_i386.deb evolution-common_2.10.1-0ubuntu2_all.deb evolution-plugins_2.10.1-0ubuntu2_i386.deb

and start Evolution.

Please tell me if you can view the mails then, as I can't open them with any mail program on Ubuntu.

Hey there

Im a new user its been 3 months windows free

Martin thanks for the big help and support
I do get alot of arabic email and the encoding is not working for me
the one you sent before showed the arabic letters but most of them are in the right places
such as the letter (KA) in arabic is in place of the letter (HA)
I tried thunderbird and works fine but I used outlook express before so evolution has every thing I need and more
the .deb file you sent did not help and after installing it I get an update notification from ubuntu for the same files I just installed

Hello Martin

I think I found a way to fix the problem on my system.
when I go to Preferences => Mail Preferences => Default character encoding: the I go down to other and in the box I type "windows-1256"

then I go to the ".evolution" folder and into "mail/local"
then I open the file "inbox" with the text editor

the I replace all "iso-8859-6" with "windows-1256" and then save the file when I reopen evolution every thing is fixed

I noticed from looking at the source of a few emails that evolution changes the encoding on emails that are 64bit but not 8bit html

Im still new to linux/ubuntu since I recently converted from MS Windows XP so if im doing any thing wrong please explain
thanks
