Bug Description

Hi, I have Lenovo G550, and I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on it. Everything was working fine till few days but now I am experiencing this problem.

When I close the lid, the screen gets black and I get no response. I tried to press Alt F1, F2 etc. but nothing worked. After that, I tried to change my power settings but it also didn't worked. The only action that I left with is to restart my laptop.

As I am new to Ubuntu and using it first time, stepwise solution will be highly appreciated.

It sounds like you might have a problem with suspending your system. Have you tried just selecting 'Suspend' from the power menu and seeing if that works okay?

Also, can you please run 'apport-collect 815942' to collect logs and other info for this bug?

Thanks,

Hi Brendan,
 As suggested by you, when I selected "Suspend" from the power menu, my laptop got switched off. Again when I pressed power button of the laptop slightly, it showed be same freezed black screen.
The only option again left for me to restart my laptop again.
It seems that problem is with suspending the system (as told by you).
I tried running "apport-collect 815942" but it asking me for the access to my Launchpad account including my private data. Will it not lead to security breach?

I am not sure whether to provide such access or not. :(

Thanks & Regards,
Kushal

Here's a few things you can try to help with diagnosing the problems. In addition to trying the following steps, please also report back whether or not your machine has a built-in serial port.

The first thing to check is whether the machine is actually hung or if the display just isn't working properly. After attempting to resume from suspend, try pinging your device on the network or logging in over ssh.

If the machine is unresponsive, you should boot with the no_console_suspend option, then run the following tests. Probably the easiest thing for you to do is modify the file /etc/default/grub in a text editor (using sudo). Modify the line that reads

  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

to read

  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="no_console_suspend"

After saving the file, run 'sudo update-grub' in a terminal. Now you will boot with the no_console_suspend option each time you boot. You can later remove the option by removing the option from /etc/default/grub and rerunning update-grub.

After rebooting, press Ctrl-Alt-F1 to switch to virtual terminal 1. Log in and run 'sudo pm-suspend'. If the device suspends successfully, press the power button to resume. If there's anything displayed on the screen when the machine hangs, take a picture of it and attach it here.

Otherwise, please try the steps on the following wiki page and report back what you find.

Thanks!
