Both main display and external display are distorted while the external monitor connector is connected.

Hi Tim -- Fixes in this area are presently in the current natty -proposed kernel (2.6.38-11), can you install this kernel, and give this another test to confirm the issue still exists?

From the screenshot, it is the same problem as 790824, so marking this bug as a duplicate of 790824.

Tested on Asus 1215P on the latest 11.04 image (/w 2.6.38-12 kernel package) and legacy Gnome desktop (no 3D desktop effects) , external display worked properly.
