Bug Description

chrome, firefox browsers, wireshark, terminal, all show the same effect. this happened once before on bootup, restarting cleared the effect and was able to open apps normally to full screen. Note this only affects the primary laptop screen, if I move the open app to the second screen, the app opens normally to full screen. Also note, the full desktop is visible on both monitors.

Pedro,

I have a standard 64-bit installation of the Unity Desktop, with desktop
effects enabled. I have not installed the compiz effects manager.

I've added launchers to the panel, including chromium, terminal server
client, and "gksudo wireshark".

hessb@monterey:~$ dpkg -l unity* | grep ii
ii unity 3.8.16-0ubuntu1~natty1
Interface designed for efficiency of space and interaction.
ii unity-asset-pool 0.8.20-0ubuntu2
         Unity Assets Pool
ii unity-common 3.8.16-0ubuntu1~natty1
Common files for the Unity interface.
ii unity-place-applications 0.2.46-0ubuntu3.1
         Application place for unity
ii unity-place-files 0.5.46-0ubuntu5.1
         File place for unity
hessb@monterey:~$

I have not been able to reproduce the problem. The problem has occurred on
two separate occasions, restarting the laptop fixed it both times. In both
cases the laptop was connected to a second monitor, running a higher
resolution than that provided by the laptop. The laptop is 1366x768, the
other monitors were 1920x1200 and 1600x1200.

Note that the limitation geometry of the windows opening when the problem
occurred, is similar to an effect I see when using the laptop monitor with
another monitor with a higher resolution. I keep the bottom of both
monitors on the same line, with the effect the lower resolution monitor has
a large dead zone above it when viewed in the Workspace Switcher. If I try
to move an app from the larger monitor to the smaller monitor, I have to
drag it so the top of the window is below the top of the smaller monitors
desktop. When the problem occurs, it is almost as if the bottom of the open
window is locked by a hidden geometry of another desktop.
