Bug Description

When you go into console mode (typing Ctrl-Alt-F1, for example), some chars looks like garbage.

The characters which looks bad in console mode are:

- í (Spanish accented i)
- ó (Spanish accented o)
- ú (Spanish accented u)
- ñ (Spanish n with tilde)

I attach a screen capture to illustrate the problem.

As you can see (sorry for the bad image quality), there are some characters that looks like "garbage".

In the screen, I just typed:

áéíóú ÁÉÍÓÚ ñÑ

but it looks like:

áé*** ÁÉÍÓÚ *Ñ

where * indicates a "garbage-look" character.

I was unable to reproduce this bug on Dapper. Which version of Ubuntu are you using? Could you give a more detailed procedure of how you created this bug so it can be reproduced easier?

Thank you for your bug report.

As you say, this bug is not in Dapper. The bug appears in Edgy (I don't know if it's in Feisty, too).

Sorry for the lack of information.

Sort of workaround:
--------------------------

If I run the following command into the console:

sudo /etc/init.d/console-setup start

then all the characters appears perfectly, although the problematic chars appears in light white color (but obviously this last issue is a minor one).

However, when I go into X-Window and then press Ctrl-Alt-F1 to go into the console, the characters appears ugly again.

It seems that the X-Window driver doesn't works well with the console.

I just realized that the problem only appears when I use the closed-source binary-only nVidia "nvidia" video drivers. When I use the open source "nv" driver, the problem doesn't appear.

Ricardo:
Does this still happen with the NVIDIA drivers in Feisty? Have you turned RenderAccel on in /etc/X11/xorg.conf ?

Yes: the problem is still here in Feisty, and I have not RenderAccel enabled in xorg.conf. I attach the xorg.conf file. Hope this helps.

What happens if you explicitly disable RenderAccel as mentioned on:

I've tried disabling RenderAccel in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf, without luck. The problem is still here in my fully updated 8.04.1.

Actually, the problem is worse now than before: I can't type any accented key in the console. When I press the accent key (') and then press any vocal, the screen remains muted. The console don't realize that I've just pressed the keys.

However, there are many text applications translated into Spanish which shows accented vocals, and these accented vocals are shown as garbage yet.

would you mind testing it either on Jaunty or Karmic and see if it
