Bug Description
I'm using the Python Xlib bindings to go through all of the xlib windows, and access their wm names using win.get_wm_name(). This bit of code used to work in earlier versions of Ubuntu, but ever since switching to Unity, many windows are marked as not 'viewable' and their window titles seem to be the titles provided during initialization, not the updated ones. A good example of this is that gedit will say its title is 'gedit', and not 'Untitled Document 1 - gedit', like it used to. This behavior is visible in other code as well, like suckless.org's lsw utility, which is programmed in C. I'm saying "I don't know" for the package name, since this may be a side-effect of unity...

This might be related to bug 666501 or bug 810423. The common factor there seems to be compiz.
Are you currently using compiz? If so, (and this is a wild guess) does the problem persist if you switch to a different window manager?
