GDM won't start, no adwaita, after GDM update

Bug Description

After updating the gdm, I rebooted the machine. After loading the kernel, I just ended up with a black screen.

Rebooted using the recovery kernel to check for problems. No package problems found. Unable to start failsafeX. Rebooted back to standard kernel, repeat black screen when I should get GDM presented to me.

Used Ctrl-Alt-1. Used startx from home-directory, got gnome shell started, but no Adwaita theme. Seems to have quite alot of themes missing from tweak-gnome-settings.

Wallpaper is not the usual blue with vertical-panelling but a flat light blue wallpaper. Black panel at the top works fine. Dock works fine. window title-bars seem a low-resolution gtk2 variety.

It happens also to me, it's pretty annoying, but if you start with root account gnome-shell DOES start.

If you do startx from a non-root it sends tou to a classic gnome desktop.
If you launch a terminal and try to launch gnome-shell it says
____________
$ gnome-shell
failed to create drawable

(gnome-shell:6684): Clutter-CRITICAL **: Unable to initialize Clutter: Unable to select the newly created GLX context
Errore del window manager: Unable to initialize Clutter.
____________

I created a new user account, just to see if it was a personal configuration problem (that root doesn't have) and it doesn''t work exactly the same way.

How can I downgrade just gdm?

Ok guys, I'm the guy that does the gNatty Gnome respin, I use UCK but my early versions I used the updated 3.0 gdm, it just didn't work right. You need to force a downgrade to the last 2.32 gdm, everything works fine, doesn't affect Unity or Gnome in any adverse way. Matter of fact gdm 3.0 introduces a path bug that shows itself when you try to launch some games such as gbrainy, probably others.

What app are you using to build your iso?

Ok, I just uninstalled anything (with ppa-purge) and then added again the
repos and reinstall and everything is fine!

@cbowman: yes, that bug is large known, there is another discussion about
that here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ugr-meta/+bug/778900

Could you please provide us with the commands you used to uninstall the things you said.

Yes, I'm sorry, sometimes my english is veeeery bad!

Anyway, I simply used
ppa-purge ppa:ubuntugnometeam/dev
ppa-purge ppa:ubuntugnometeam/ppa-gen
and
ppa-purge ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3

ppa-purge is a very useful utility:

That's very strange, because ppa-purge just install the default packages,
please check with
apt-cache policy gdm
which version you have installed on your system.

Have you got any other ppas enabled on your system?

So you didn't actually purge gnome3 ppa.

There's a new bug about the latest gdm version, because there's a
problem with some libraries.

Try to purge the ppas as I did, you will be back with a unity
system, but al least it boots and you can wait for a new version of
gdm.

Since I had to look it up, here are the instructions on how to downgrade your version of gdm until this issue is fixed:

sudo aptitude install gdm=2.32.1-0ubuntu3.2

Or you can specify a different version.
I found the possible versions by installing apt-show-versions and then using

apt-show-versions -a -p gdm

@russianwatcher, @Davide: Can you confirm that this issue still exists with the latest updates? You can use the 'recovery console' session option to do updates if you cannot get into GNOME. I still have not been able to replicate this issue.

Be aware that if you have any shell extensions installed and the GNOME shell is updated, crashes WILL occur. Shell extensions will only work with the shell version that they were compiled on; they will almost always crash the shell if a different version is used.
To remove any shell extensions, run the following command in the 'recovery console' session:
rm -r .local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/*

Everyone affected by this issue, please run the updates and commands specified above (even if you do not think you have extensions installed) and report the results.
