Bug Description

After a few embarrassed library moments I have disabled sound for my laptop by selecting my sound theme as "No sounds". In some programmers infinite wisdom however it has been decided that I still need to hear an irritating little drum role when the login window appears.

As a side note:
It also used to be easy in the past to set sounds for individual events but I were not able to find it. I blame Ubuntu and lack of morning coffee, in no particular order.

I must ask you, however, to be careful when uttering semi-sarcastic statements like "some programmers infinite wisdom". Though I, personally, can retrace your original intent to some level, others might not recognize this as a joke, and will perceive this comment as abrasive.

As for the sound of drums, did you untick the "play login sound" box in the "login screen" window of the system settings dialog?

Hi Thijs,
Thank you for the update.
In all honesty my comment was not intended as a joke. I were at the time very irritated by the sound playing after I have selected the theme "no sound". I apologise for the comment and have endeavoured to keep my bug reports factual which I normally do.

I have not unticked anything else, other than select the sound theme. If I have to untick that box in addition to selecting a no sounds theme I would consider that as a bug and if not at the very least completely unintuitive. I am unable to confirm that unticking the box will resolve my issue as I am currently in the middle of a lot of work, but when I get a chance I will look into it further and confirm.

I would agree that this is currently counter-intuitive, yes.
I've created a separate bug to address this design issue, bug 814024. If the drums still play even after unticking "play login sound", feel free to reopen this issue.

Hi Thijs
I have checked this morning and the "Play Login Sound" checkbox is indeed disabled but it still plays the sound. I double checked to be sure. I will check it a bit later today log out and the uncheck it again to see if perhaps it lost its state somewhere.

Regards

Thanks for reporting back.
If the drums still sound after a reboot, we have an actual problem in gdm on our hands. Otherwise, it's just an undocumented oddity.

affects: ubuntu → gdm (Ubuntu)
