Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/UpdateManager/Core/MetaRelease.py", line 297, in download
    self.parse()
  File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/UpdateManager/Core/MetaRelease.py", line 216, in parse
    step_result = index_tag.step()
SystemError: E:Type 'sudo' is not known on line 61 in

What exactly are you trying to do when this error is shown?

What are you clicking or what command are you running?

Or does it just show up seemingly spontaneously?

update-manager > ~/Desktop/file

I already had this error trying to update 16.04.1 LTS

The problem is that the /var/lib/update-manager/meta-release-lts-development file doesn't exists on my system.

Basing on :
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/174266/comments/4

I fixed the problem creating a new one with this content:
