Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image

The bug appeared when I tried to upgrade my ubuntu from maverick to natty. My kernel under maverick is 2.6.35, the kernel under natty was 2.6.38.

Description of the bug : the computer works perfectly fine, but when I shut it down, there is a loud "crack" (not a beep) at the very end of the process. It is probably not a speakers cracking, because I have tried it with external speakers, and the sound still came from the computer. It does the same for hibernation or sleep, except that the noise is done twice when put to sleep. The noise appears too with the natty live-cd (when I shut down, it appears just after removing the cd).

I think it is a kernel bug, because when I boot on a older kernel (grub still proposes old versions), there is no problem. I tried installing 2.6.39 to see if it helped, but the noise is still there.

I am using a HP Pavilion DV6000 laptop (dual boot ubuntu/vista).

(I forgot to tell, I downgraded to maverick because I feared the bug could harm the computer, so I am posting this bug report from maverick whereas the problem is on natty, I don't know if it affect the collected information, but I prefer telling you)

I come again to give some more information. I upgraded to oneric ocelot, then precise pangolin, and the bug is still there. But I just discovered that it is an audio problem.

When you plug external speakers not before the shutdown, but during the shutdown, the sound comes from the external speakers, and not from the computer. And regularly, plugging external speakers makes the cracking sound appear.

I tried staying on lucid lynx's kernel, it solves the problem. Uninstalling alsa solves the problem too (but oss4 does not work on my computer).

I think it is a matter of correctly shutting down the speakers before shutting down the computer, but I have no idea how to do that.

elodie, this report has had any activity in a while. Would this still be an issue for you? If so, could you please provide the full computer model as noted on the sticker of the computer itself (not from the Bug Description)?

Sorry, I thought I had reported months ago that this was no longer an issue for me, but it seems I had not... The last LTS fixed this completely for me.
