Bug Description

In relation to Question #155707 there is not any documentation or advertising explaining to users that they have the choice to remain with the Classic desktop or the new Unity desktop.

A screen or explanation during the install process may help.

Thanks

I'm sorry, but we don't want anything like that. GNOME-Panel was on the CD as a _fallback_ in case Unity fails. In Oneiric, Unity-2D will take its place, and you won't have gnome-panel any more.

Unity is the new face of Ubuntu. Showing two different interfaces will not only confuse the user, but will also show an inferior side of the Ubuntu OS.

Moreover, gnome-panel 3 will be in the Oneiric main repositories, so if you still like it, all you'd need to do is install the gnome-panel package in Oneiric and then, just like in Natty, you'll get a choice at the GDM/LightDM login screen.

Thanks Bilal,

Do I need to do anything? I'm not sure if I am meant to close this or something if it's decided that no action will be taken.

Let me know if I can help.

Mark W, this is not related to Unity so the bug is being closed due to this and the reasons described by Bilal.

Tagging Invalid implies there was no problem in the first place..

Tagging "Wont Fix" would have been more appropriate, as it's more honest and doesn't cover over the issue.

In fact it would be best to tag the Unity ones the same way, so the community can see how disasterously inflexible Ubuntu leadership has become.

Once you understand that Unity is the user interface and not a
document pack you will realize invalid is the best status for this
bug.

If the issue was raised before Ubuntu-11.04 release it might have been
considered, raising the issue after release and also knowing that
gnome-panel is no more in the Oneiric live cd anymore we can safely
assume the old interface has been replaced and Unity is now the face
of Ubuntu.

I well and truly understand..

But please take it as deserved chastisement from the community, that not explaining this was the wrong course of action..

Major things like this should ALWAYS be explained clearly before hand. It's highly unprofessional and disrespectful to do otherwise..

Ie, Ubuntu, Try do do better next time.
