As always, run

update-usbids

And check that it is still referenced as vfs101 (I don't think it will)

I did exactly as you asked...

sudo update-usbids

yvan@yvan-B53J:~$ lsusb | grep 0008
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 138a:0008 Validity Sensors, Inc. VFS300 Fingeprint
Reader

What should I do next?

I ran a quick lsusb which resulted in an update from what used to be
there...

The vfs101 driver that's included in libfprint0 doesn't seem to work, even if the USB id is changed to 138a:0008 (from :0001).

fprint_demo says "Device ready for use", but "Image capture" is "Not implemented yet".
Trying to "Enroll" hangs at "Step 1 of 3" - the driver doesn't seem to work, no finger is detected.

This is with (debian) libfprint0=20110418git-2 and fprint-demo=20080303git-5.

Changed in libfprint (Ubuntu):
status: New → Confirmed

I have a Dell vostro 3400 with ubuntu 11.04, the figerprint was recognized with lsusb as:

Bus 001 Device 004: ID 138a:0008 DigitalPersona, Inc

after sudo update-usbids I got with lsusb:

Bus 001 Device 004: ID 138a:0008 Validity Sensors, Inc. VFS300 Fingerprint Reader

I installed the packages for fingerprint using this commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:fingerprint/fingerprint-gui
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libbsapi policykit-1-fingerprint-gui fingerprint-gui

But fingerprint-gui do not recognize the device:

DigitalPersona, Inc (138a:0008) unknown device (0x8)

I have the same problem.
