Bug Description

Binary package hint: software-center

When scrolling through the reviews for an application while it's installing (maybe I should read the reviews before installing?) I will eventually want to go back to the top to check the install progress. Pressing 'Home' doesn't do this at the moment, but it would be nice if it did.

For illustrative purposes I've included the screen that I refer to. It's the pane on the left with the reviews in it.

I don't think this can be classed as a wishlist if it's working unless the application is installing. That's clearly a bug, albeit a minor one. I'll wait for your agreement before changing it though.

In fact, even after you finish installing the application it still doesn't work - so something is clearly messed up here.

I have tested this with Software Center 5.2.4 from precise, and the problem is gone, PgDn, PgUp, Home and End can all be used on the details page while the application is installing. Do you still see this?

Hi Robert,

I'm not sure if anything happened on my system or not (it's quite an old install), but the behaviour I see at the moment is:

Before pressing install:

Arrow keys: NO
PgUp/Dn: YES
Home/End: NO

After pressing Install:

Arrow keys: NO
PgUp/Dn: NO
Home/End: NO

I can't confirm this is fixed at the moment, so I'd need to get a fresh Precise install done in a VM and retry. Please remind me to do this if you haven't heard in a few days.

Brendan, this is your reminder. :-) Thanks for testing.

With a fresh install of Precise on a VM I *still* see exactly what I describe above, so not only is this not fixed - it has been made worse. Obviously this conflicts directly with what Robert has said so I'm not quite sure what is going on.

I have tried again with some mad-monkey scenarios:
Test case 1:
1. click Install/Remove
2. scroll with the mouse scroll wheel
3. keep pressing Page Up/Home key repeatedly
4. when it starts working again, take a quick glimpse at the install/remove button/progressbar

Test case2:
Same as test case 1, only in step 2 scroll with the scrollbars (overlay scrollbars)

With test case 1, most of the times I have seen the progressbar for a short period, and the install/remove button has appeared only afterwards, so this means that either the special keys are blocked only during some parts of the install, or that they are blocked while an install/remove is in progress, but I did see the progressbar as the screen/window did not get updated instantaneously after the transaction has finished.
With test case 2, I have never seen the progressbar, PgUp/End keys have started working only after the button has appeared again.
Sorry for the confusion, in my previous test I must have chosen an application which is installed/removed very quickly, that is why I have been thinking that the keys do work while installing.

@Robert,

Can you confirm that in fact the Home/End keys don't even work at all (even if an application is not installing)? This would in fact be a regression so it would be good to confirm. It might need a seperate bug.

@Brendan: Yes and no. On a freshly started software center app details page they do not work indeed, however after the first install/remove operation has finished, Home/End do start working.
