Bug Description

After having upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 wireless lan is working with many interruptions. This bug was fixed in 10.10 which had stabile wireless connections with the same machine.

When the network goes down these lines can be found via dmesg:

By the way, this is happening only on a WPA TKIP ENTERPRISE with users being authenticated against radius. Wifi infrastructure is all cisco, and it's a university campus network so plenty of other users running all sort of other devices without problems.

If i boot with windows 7, i can get a stable connection.

At home with WPA-PSK, it works fine.

My laptop is a Packard Bell with an Intel 4965.

A read a post from a fedora user who has found a workaround by building driver with experimental firmware.
I don't know what kind of hack is that, if someone can tell more about it.

I also noticed that the bug does not occur when wifi signal is excellent.

It's not quite that straightforward. I have this happening on a WPA PSK encrypted network at home. It does seems to happen less often when the laptop is in straight line of sight with a strong signal. My laptop is a HP Compaq 8510w with Intel 4965AGN Wi-Fi.

I'm in a house with poor signal here and it's impossible to stay connected more than 5 minutes, while in my house with good signal it's a bit more stable.

I've downgraded to the previous firmware and it's working so far (for about 3-4 days in a row). Here is a short howto:

1) download the previous firmware version from http://intellinuxwireless.org/iwlwifi/downloads/iwlwifi-4965-ucode-228.57.2.23.tgz
2) rename your actual firmware /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-4965-2.ucode to something else (e.g. /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-4965-2.ucode.copy), just in case ...
3) unpack the tar and copy the firmware iwlwifi-4965-2.ucode into /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-4965-2.ucode
4) restart the wireless module:
  sudo rmmod iwlagn
  sudo modprobe iwlagn
5) check that the new firmware has been successfully loaded:
  dmesg | grep firmware
  [105935.317633] iwlagn 0000:02:00.0: loaded firmware version 228.57.2.23

HugoHirsch, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

It's possible that the bug still existed at the time of writing https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/779159/comments/15

Currently it seems to happen more often and it sometimes blocks the machine from shutting down.

Hi guys,

Would it be possible to re-open this bug and get to the bottom of it?
I have got a laptop that I have just upgraded from 10.04 to 12.04 and the exact same bug appeared. I keep being disconnected from my wireless network (WPA protected).
I am happy to spend the time needed to help solving this bug.
Could the developper in charge of this bug contact me please?

Thanks a lot in advance.

I'm currently not able to reproduce the bug since my machine died.

Can anyone of the 13 people that are affected by this bug either reopen the bug or confirm that it's expired or solved.
