Bug Description

the installation of package cpufreqd along with indicator-cpufreq causes the indicator to malfunction.
It is capable of changing cpu frequency governor but not it's frequency. This is checked by cpufreq-info. Also if the value is changed to a specific frequency, then it is automatically set to the maximum.

The problem goes away purging package cpufreqd and probably reinstalling cpufrequtils.

Hmm, the indicator doesn't conflict cpufreqd directly, only when cpufreqd is running, right? Also, the indicator may serve for the purpose of indicating current frequency, which is switched by cpufreqd behind the scenes.

It might be better to detect a running instance of cpufreqd and disable switching frequency from the popup menu, perhaps?

summary: - indicator-cpufreq should mark cpufreqd in the conflicts list

I think the indicator should have certain configuration to disable cpufreqd and take the control over the cpu frequencies. Otherwise it is just sitting there without any purpose. You can change the governor from "ondemand" to "performance" or "powersave" but is just useless because the actual governor is cpufreqd that drives the frequency to the top.

Perhaps a direct interaction with cpufreqd should be calling it's methods to control the frequency, but is adding another layer to the process, Ubuntu natty is already overloaded and (probably) affects performance.

well, it's normally the user who should disable cpufreqd. i still cannot figure out, why anybody would want to install both cpufreqd and indicator-cpufreq on a single system.

well, indicator-cpufreq does not work in Ubuntu 11.04, with or without cpufrepd.

type indicator-cpufreq in gnome-terminal gives out nothing.

This is still the case. I've been wrestling with this problem for months, finally found this report and the fix mentioned in #1 immediately resolved the issue.

I don't know much about cpufreq, just a helpless newbie who fell into this trap.
