Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I've upgraded to Natty a few days ago. Since that time, each boot ends with this messages:
[ 23.910681] render error detected, EIR: 0x00000010
[ 23.910689] IPEIR: 0x00000000

[ 23.910711] [drm:i915_report_and_clear_eir] *ERROR* EIR stuck: 0x00000010, masking

System then starts and works correctly but very often DOSBox run in fullscreen after exiting locks up the desktop screen (even though the process is gone, I still see the window, panel stop refreshing, I see a mouse cursor but I can't click anything etc.). Switching to tty1 and back makes it show last shown tty1 contents - as if X lost the ability to refresh the screen. The only way to recover is to reboot or restart the gdm service.

I use Ubuntu Classic desktop with Compiz. I had such problems neither in Lucid nor in Maverick before.

I am experiencing the exact same behavior, with Dosbox and with Maelstrom (both in full screen mode)

I can also switch to tty1 and switch back.

I've run the last 5 Ubuntu distributions and never had a problem.

Hey, it's not only Dosbox. It has just happened to me with Lugaru (a game from Wolfire). It seems the issue occurs when the fullscreen resolution is different than the default screen size...

Come on guys, it's a critical bug! Please, fix it asap.

I am fairly certain I was able to duplicate the issue in Kubuntu Natty. It does not appear to be a problem in Xubuntu Natty. If it's a show-stopper for anyone, and you are satisfied with Xubuntu instead of Ubuntu/Kubuntu, that may be a solution until it gets fixed. I am running Xubuntu now, at least until 11.10 or 12.04 comes out to see if this goes away.

Please, let me know here if it works in 11.10 and/or 12.04. For now I went back to Maverick and I think I'll just wait till the next LTS, Natty was too buggy for me. Thus, I'd be interested in your opinion. :)

I'm starting to think that this has been patched for at least some hardware, because I can no longer duplicate it on my HP G60 laptop in Ubuntu 11.04. It hasn't happened in a long time in either Maelstrom or Dosbox.

Hey mgol,

You filed this bug report against natty, but I see it's still open and
doesn't appear to have much activity recently. So, now that oneiric
is released and stable, this may be a good point for you to upgrade
and re-test if this issue is still present there.

If it's solved in the new release and you think it's worth backporting
the fix, please indicate that. Or if having the fix in the new release
is good enough, feel free to close out the bug (or let us know and we'll
close it.)

If it's not solved, leave the bug report open. I can't promise we'll
get to it (we get way more bugs filed than we can usually get to), but
your testing and feedback can help out if and when we do.

This problem appears to be solved in Oneiric. I would go ahead and close it out. I actually think updates fixed it before Oneiric came out in Natty, but either way, it seems fixed.
