Applications intermittently open up blank windows - the menu bar appears at the top but with nothing visible underneath it.

I have no idea what the source of the problem is but so far it has affected, apparently randomly, the update manager, the download folder, Firefox and Chrome browsers and the applications manager.

I'm using Ubuntu 11.04. All previous versions of the Os have worked fine.
