libva appears to be broken in Natty. I downgraded back to the libva pacakges from 10.10 and VLC works with hardware once again.

I can confirm that its broken in Natty ( for any kind of video media types, such as xvid or h264 ).
Surprisingly the audio playback seems to work on my machine.

Hopefully somebody changes the priority/importance of this bug to critical. So that we have the chance to get a fix soon. In the mean time I am using smplayer ( which has very limited hardware acceleration by the way ).

When I load vlc the video gets caught up and freezes. The audio stream perfectly but the vlc application completely freezes and my mouse skips across the page causing my entire to computer to lag. It usually takes about 3 minutes to finally load system monitor and kill vlc. Movie Player, however, plays the same videos completely fine with no hang up.

Same problem here, 2 different computers after upgrading to ubuntu 11.04 vlc freezes when playing mp3 files. I haven't tried video files.

Is this the same as Bug #772248?

Yes its possible that its related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vlc/+bug/772248 .

I am using vdpau as well with the proprietary nvidia driver ( while the nouveau driver is not on a acceptable level yet ). Even so the hardware acceleration is disabled / greyed out when I am starting and opening the vlc properties.
