Does it work any better if you run VLC as:
$ vlc --no-embedded-video
?

Can you attach the X11 properties of the "buggy" fullscreen window (run "xprop" then click on the window)?

the command vlc --no-embedded-video seriously affects everything: the video no longer plays (I hear the sound but see nothing but the vlc icon on the screen), the window moves from small to fullscreen but still displays the title bar and the default vlc icon while playing the movie (and still no image just sound). I cannot watch anything with this parameter. And what is worse I cannot get out of vlc from fullscreen unless I close the application.

This is the output from the terminal when running vlc --no-embedded-video&

Version 1.2.0~~git20110507+r610-0~r24~natty1 (from ppa:videolan/master-daily) fixes this bug for me (11.04, gnome classic, no effects, proprietary nvidia driver)

Of course, with --no-embedded-video, the video is not embedded... so the main UI shows the cone. You need to look at the dedicated video window!

And even if I do look at the fullscreen separate window, if I move the mouse then I get the player window with the icon. And I can no longer do anything and I have to kill the application.

I can reproduce this bug in vlc 1.1.9 by double clicking the video (going fullscreen). Moving the mouse lets the gnome panel appear. This is fixed in vlc 1.1.10.

Accepted vlc into natty-proposed, the package will build now and be available in a few hours. Please test and give feedback here. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Thank you in advance!

Seems to be fixed by the proposed update, at least in my case.

Bug present in Precise Pangolin.

No need to interact with the computer.

1 - Launch your video using VLC
2 - Press 'F' to go in fullscreen
3 - Wait
4 - gnome-panel show

Precise Pangolin 64-bits fully updated as of 4th of March 2012.

I experience this bug in precise, but not only with vlc but also with totem or mplayer, so it is obviously not a vlc bug.
It is present in unity and gnome classic, but only under compiz. So using gnome-panel with metacity is a workaround (alt+F2 "metacity --replace")

This is probably a different and new bug. Please open a new bug. Things would become very confusing otherwise.

(Besides upstream GNOME is probably not reading Launchpad directly)
